Diydrones published a small tutorial on how to convert a cheap small robotic arm to a fully programmable ARDUINO controlled robot. The total cost is around 100$ and the ingredients are an OWI Robot Edge Arm, an Arduino Uno, a motor shield and some cheap components.  you can try making it or use it as a component for more elaborate robots.
